Rowe Arts Gallery Hosting New Exhibitions
CHARLOTTE -- Jan. 21, 2009 -- UNC Charlotte's Department of Art and Art History is sponsoring three new exhibits in Rowe Arts Gallery.
"Figure/Gesture and Color" will be displayed Tuesday, Jan. 20, through Sunday, Feb. 15, in the Upper Gallery. It features three series of paintings “Single Figure,” “Double Figure” and “The Three Graces” by Basilios Poulos. These series represent the artist’s attempts to construct a painting using vertical figures with abstract color in both the figure and the ground.
Recently retired from Rice University, Poulos makes his home in Houston, Texas. However, he is originally from the Charlotte area, and his work is displayed in galleries and museums along the East Coast. An opening reception for the exhibit, along with a talk by the artist, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Jan. 20.
A display of ceramic sculpture by department chair Roy Strassberg also debuts Jan. 20 in the Rowe Arts Building Main Gallery. The exhibit “Holocaust Bone Structures: Black Angels” is the result of Strassberg’s challenge to find an appropriate metaphor for examining mass murder as the subject of artistic expression. He will discuss the work at a reception from 4 to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21.
The third exhibit opening this month is “Ultralight.” It features the work of visiting Dutch designer Harmen Liemburg and will be displayed from Jan. 21 to Feb. 13. (See next tip for more).
